Noises, a Prelude to Fireflies

June 17, 2010 by Rieshy

Backyard weaves the sound of In-between.
Car doors announcing arrivals and departures
while dogs greet and balls rebound.

From high-pitched shouts and bangs of swings swung crooked,
to discussions on where begonias were hung
and why they shouldn't.

Mowers thrum with work-after-work.
A grocery sack blows by;
a suburban tumbleweed playing brush percussion.

Grills grill on decks while sprinklers sprinkle.
Outdoors living in and indoors living out the mix
in-betwixt house and bush and neighbor.

Not day nor night but before the flight of fireflies,
before the blue flicker of electronic hearths,
sounds In-between.

I have never seen a firefly. We don't have them where I live. Interesting you should post this, as my employees were just talking about them yesterday. Don't you just love summer? All the fun activities, warm weather, and beauty of nature? So much to give thanks for. Happy TT!

I rarely see fireflies - I've been wondering if they're extinct!

This was such a lovely reflection on the simple pleasure of everyday life. It's so easy to lose our appreciation of these things in the hustle and bustle of it all, but you've captured it in an enchanting way. So glad you shared it with us!

If you want to see fireflies Tennessee is the place to be!

JoAnn, I have to give credit to my 15 yo. She was sitting with me on the front porch when a Kroger sac blew by and she named it a "suburban tumbleweed". In fact that's how the poem came to be because then we sat there and discussed all the noises we could hear.

Oh how I missed seeing fireflies! The house I grew up as a kid used to be frequented by fireflies. That was when trees were plenty but now it's concrete jungle everywhere.
