Choosing Memories

October 18, 2012 by Rieshy
.

I took my three youngest sons hiking yesterday.  It was magical.  One of those perfect fall days of sunshine and fresh air and brilliant color.  A perfect storm of all the best that Tennessee woods have to offer.

We were journeying hobbits one moment then as we passed along a gravel topped spill-way my 4 year old began to drag his hiking boots and acted as though he couldn't quite keep his feet on the ground, "Look, I'm John Carter of Mars!"

We saw turtles and geese and flowers and a man in khakis, dress shoes and a good haircut "hike" past sipping from a Starbucks coffee cup.  Evidently his break-room door is a portal into a State Park.  We passed a group of Japanese tourists all dressed in black and white striped shirts and pushing strollers.  An odd sort of chain-gang?

The boys danced in the wind gusts trying to catch leaves.  Which would have been peaceful except that the gust kept timing out to when we were at the edge of precipices.

Back to the Canadian Geese, they were gorgeous and huge, and they made my 4 year old hungry.  "Mom, remember how I learned to swim under water this summer?"

"Yep."

"Well, I think I could slip into the water and swim until I was under that goose and then I could pop up and grab it and then we could eat it for lunch."

"Wow," I responded.

"I'll do it right now," he said as he stepped to the edge of washed out road above the lake.

So many mental images.  I know we are not allowed to take leaves and flowers out of the State Park- but what's the law on hand-caught geese?

As a mom I choose this outing as a keeper-memory to put at the top of my stack of go-to memories.  I control my brain's memory filing-system so why not use connection moments like these as my mental screen saver?

Sleep, Precious Sleep

May 8, 2012 by Rieshy
.

I have a great life, a blessed life; so don't pick up rocks to throw thinking that I'm whining.  I'm not.  I'm merely stating facts; I have been sleep deprived for 6 years now.

6 years.

6 years ago my 6th child was born.  He nursed poorly and often.  Later he drank from a bottle poorly and often.  Then in a blur his little brother was born.  Two Littles.  Two precious Littles plus older children and a life full of family and school and work.

I burned the candle at both ends.  I often felt like I was the candle, a messy molten mess.  My two Littles were diagnosed with a metabolic condition that required them to be fed at night, long long looonnngggg after typical children give up night feedings.

After 6 years my 6 year old is finally cleared to sleep the night without any night feedings!  He just has to take 7 T  of raw corn starch mixed into milk before bed.  Yeah, I know that's weird, but it's normal for many of those with a Fatty Acid Oxidation Defect.

Sleep.

Sleep.

I can now go to bed at 10:30 or 11:00 and sleep till 5:30.  7 hours. I've averaged only 3 to 4 hours in a stretch for years now.  In fact for over a year I lived on an average total of 3 1/2 to 4 max.  Talk about going mental...

What do I plan on doing with all this extra sleep?

Rejoice.  Thank God for the grace he's given me over the years.

My two sons are healthy and thriving.  We made it through their early growth spurts.  I plan on sleeping well until they hit puberty.  I got my hair done.

What else do I plan on doing?

I don't know, I feel giddy with energy so for now I'll stick with Philippians 4:4

"Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say Rejoice."

A Thou-Shalt-Not Original

February 4, 2012 by Rieshy
.

Over the years my husband and I have vetoed or forbidden, certain ideas that crop up as predictably as developmental milestones with our children.  One after the other each child has had to have the rules of life gently explained.

Things like:

Thou may not spit at thy sibling no matter the provocation.

Thou may not pretendeth to drown at the pool.

Thou art not Hugh Jackman thus thou may not taketh all the table knives between fingers to role-playeth Wolverine.

By child numbered 6 and 7 we are mostly forbidding repeats. Until last night.  Last night was a new one.  Last night I had to write a rule I never even dreamed of.

My husband and I came home from a date and saw strange shadows in the little boy's window.  I went into their room ostensibly to kiss them goodnight but mostly to see what they had been up to.  Blankets were draped all over the room.  Okay, clubhouse building after bedtime.  Totally fine.

My 5 year old's eyes sparkled when I walked in the room.  "Mom look what we built!"

"Cool."

"Can I sleep in it?"

"The clubhouse?  Sure."

"No, I mean the hammock I built with ropes from the garage."  He climbed out onto the comforter I thought was merely draped between the tops of their two bunk beds and lay down.  He gently swung back and forth while on his back 5 feet off the ground. "See, it swings just like in The Voyage of The Dawn Treader."

Ropes from the garage.  My son was dangling between bunk beds on a hammock he (my 5 year old) had built with ropes from the garage.

In shock I left the room and got my husband.  Parenting joys such as these must be shared, plus I needed time to compose our newest family rule.

The building of hammocks is henceforth and for all time forbidden.

Sprung Spring

February 3, 2012 by Rieshy

.

Yesterday we had one of those curious February days of full sunshine, fresh breezes and warm weather.  My entire family was giddy.  Windows were raised, shorts donned, and school work done outside.

My husband roller-bladed with the Littles and I grilled hamburgers and fat potato-fries on the grill.  My 4 yo licked the ketchup from his plate.  We dipped strawberries in freshly whipped cream for dessert.

After dark we entered into family wide multi-national negotiations in order to pick out a movie to stay up late and watch together.  Believe me with a family of nine this is serious stuff.

I don't do well at planning holidays or birthdays.  It gives me stage fright, and I have a curiously frustrating habit of forgetting important dates.  A spring sprung on me?

That I can roll with.

Just not roller blades.

Not A Synonym and Too Much Hank

October 21, 2011 by Rieshy
.

My 5 year old checked out a Hank the Cowdog c.d. from the library.  Everywhere we drive we are accompanied by Hank's tales.  I'm starting to cogitate in Hank's vernacular, see, because as head of this ranch's social life I do a lot of cogitation.

It's kind of like what happens after an overdose of Dr. Suess.

I was fixin dinner yesterday.  "Fixin" because we live in the South.  We fix a lot of things.  We can even be fixin to fix a lot of things.

Anyway.  I'll try to write normally now...

My 3 year old ran in the back door in a gleeful burst of fresh air and hollered, "I need a sharp knife to cut the skin off too!"

So of course I reached in the knife drawer and handed my 3 year old a sharp knife.

Wait, no I didn't.  I believe what happened was a momentary tableau.  At the exact moment that he hollered, "sharp knife, and, skin," several other family members were in motion moving through the dining room and kitchen.  We all froze.

I think the word "skin" was the clincher.

"Um, what skin?"

"The skin like big brother is cutting off with his knife."

Well that was helpful.   There was a general household-wide movement to the back door.  "The skin of the pointy thing... you know..."

Why do children speak so slowly when you most want them to HURRY UP and get to the point.

"Oh, you know off a tree, a stick.  The skin on a stick."

"Bark!" exhaled 3 or 4 listeners all at once.

I think we offended him with our laughter.

Tiny Silences

April 17, 2011 by Rieshy
.

In our van driving to church services this morning:

3 year old ponders out loud, "What's in my heart?"

Dad answers, "Joy?"

Mom simultaneously answers, "Blood?"

16 year old sister responds, "Supergalactic Universal Oneness."

There's a pause and 3 year old corrects us all, "No, ANIMALS!"

While we are silently dumbfounded 5 year old brother responds, "No, when you eat animal crackers they don't stay animals."

3 year old disagrees, "When I eat animal crackers they stay animals and they go crazy inside me."

5 year old, using knowledgeable older brother lecturing voice, "No food turns into throw-up after you eat."

Mom and Dad, "Ughhhh."   Dad tries to correct 3 year old, "Bolus, not throw-up."

Mom, "UGHHH."

Always the non sequitur genius, 3 year old shouts, "LOOK, A TINY SCHOOL BUS IS DRIVING BY!!!"

5 year old asks, "Who rides in the tiny school bus?"

Dad, "Tiny school children."

Silence.

Finally.

Moments

April 4, 2011 by Rieshy
.

I'm washing dishing and looking out the back window.  My husband is playing with our three youngest sons.  They are in a big plastic climbing cube that he is slowly rolling.  Raucous good times.

The last Sunday night I stood here washing dishes was also a good night.  Little did I know that my boys would wake in the night with the stomach virus from hell.  Litttle did I know what drama was about to unfold.

I took one boy to the hospital around midnight that Sunday and then called home the next morning only to have to hang up because my 16 year old needed to call 911 while my husband tried to administer glucose gel to my lethargic 3 year old.

I waited, helpless and unknowing, in an observation room (in another city) with my sick 5 year old for the intercom announcement of the ambulance arriving with my sick 3 year old.

I'll never forget the feeling of being crumpled to my knees one moment and then raised the next.

I'll never forget that first hug with my 3 year old. He was still strapped in his carseat, strapped to a gurney and attached to an I.V. pole rolling down the E.R. hallway.

It was a rolling, overwhelming, dextrose enhanced, adrenaline rushed thanksgiving sort of hug.

So this Sunday night, I wash dishes and glance outside and feel blessed.  I feel blessed and yet know that I will be annoyed with my boys about something-or-other several times before bed.  They will misbehave one moment and shine the next.

I'm too weak to be consistently thankful or consistently joyful.  No memory is that powerful, but I can thank God for moments of clarity.  Moments when I see clearly.  Moments on the hospital floor praying and feeling God's presence.

Moments that remind me of the power of the Cross and God's overwhelming sacrificial love.

Birthdays and Beyond

November 25, 2010 by Rieshy
.

I know that today I should have some sort of sentimental Thanksgiving post.  However I don't have a turkey in the oven for the first Thanksgiving in 23 years, so I'm not smelling the sentiment.

I am thankful though.  Thankful that my 18 yo son put the moral of the movie, "Beauty and The Beast" in a nutshell for me, "If your boyfriend is abusive and has anger management issues, don't worry, he'll magically get better." Maybe not a romantic nutshell, but a funny one.

5 of my kids are off visiting Grandma.  Yes, she is the best Grandmother in the world.  My two year old got to shoot a bee-bee gun today.  Does life get better than that?  Or actually, does life get better than having your two year old have the fun of shooting a gun without having to see it happen?  Starting to feel the Thanksgiving.

Oh, wait my two year old turned 3 today and my 8 year old turned 9 on Tuesday.  More Thanksgiving.

With my little ones away I set up my loom in the middle of the living room and warped it, all in one morning.  I got up and wove in the middle of the night for several hours and then slept in.  Can you hear the almost hysterical joyous giggle? Definite Thanksgiving, no turkey required.

My 16 yo bought me a huge Toblerone candy bar that we are all eating off of.  We had bacon, cream cheese and bagels for breakfast. The three of us left at home are practically rolling in fatty foods- all forbidden when the Littles, with their medical diet, are around.  Mmmmm, Toblerone.

I miss my younger kids though.

Speaking of my 2 birthday boys with their birthdays just two days apart.

Ben, just 6 at the time, spent some time pondering the eventuality of a shared birthday.  He came to me one morning to let me know that it would work fine to have the baby during his birthday party because,
"Everyone can get here and then after we have the cake you can go in your bedroom and have the baby and then come out afterward with the baby for the opening of my birthday gifts."

Wasn't that sweet?  It actually sort of worked out that way.  Except there was no cake.

I think I'll go eat some more Toblerone.

Snippets

Since it is medically imperative that my 4 year old eat every two hours, he of course, has never been a huge fan of eating.  I've heard lots of excuses over the past few years for why he can't eat, some are strange, some are funny, all are aggravating.  Yesterday I heard a fairly original one.  He claimed he could not eat because, "My left eye hurts and it makes me not able to eat... unless I watch a movie first."

Parenting is all about a good poker face.

Speaking of my 4 year old, I had to laugh last night when I was tucking him into bed.  Hanging on the wall over his pillow is a colored in picture of William The Silent.  Last year it was crayon monsters adorning his wall.  This year it's 16th century Dutch leaders.  Next year??

------------

I'm sitting in the catbird seat today.  All my sick kiddos seem to be on the mend, take that, oh you dratted virus!  But even better, two dear friends have asked if I will "train" them to be able to take care of my chronically ill children in case my husband is out of town while I have to be in the hospital with one child.

Why Yes!  I will.

I'm feeling loved.  It's better than coffee.

In Case of Cinammon Rolls: Step Off The Pedestool

October 6, 2010 by Rieshy
.

Between commuting to college and working, our oldest son is rarely home while the Littles are awake.  They miss him desperately.  He is their hero and personal jungle gym, who unlike their father, never makes them go to bed or eat broccoli.

When the Littles  see our oldest it generally involves an explosion of climbing/wrestling/leaping/tossing.  As my 16 daughter put it, "Ring-Around-The-Rosie, mosh-pit style."

It also involves just lolling about on his person.

Their hero.

Except....  This morning I made cinnamon rolls in honor of Fall Break.  Everyone's first question was, "Is Luke still home?"  At first I thought- how sweet, they are looking out for their big brother.

I only had a few seconds to bask in filial love. When I replied sadly, "No, he's at school," several sets of little fists pumped the air and the 8 year old shouted, "Great!  Luke eats a lot of cinnamon rolls when he's home."

Sorry dear oldest son, your hero status is limited to within certain parameters.

When Garbage Makes You Feel Good on Friday

August 6, 2010 by Rieshy
.
It's time for the Girl Next Door's Feel Good Friday.  It's also garbage pickup day on our street.

What's the connection?

My oldest son has done the garbage chore for years.  However, suddenly he has a life outside our home.  College. Work. Girlfriend.

Hopefully in that order- no offense intended, Brittany.

My almost 9 year old son has been in training.  This morning he did the garbage chore without forgetting anything.  Wahoo!

We have another 10 year garbage run covered and then my current 2 year old can pick up the slack.  Boys... noisy and goofy, but also quite useful.

Which leads me to my second Feel Good.  It's worth at least 4 Feel Goods, bringing my total to the meme's required 5.

My 4 year old son dressed himself for our "formal" family portrait.  He could only reach the 2 year old's Winter clothing.  He made do.

He's so cute it makes me grin.

Times-Font Thoughts

June 15, 2010 by Rieshy
Chronically ill

Means sometimes not. Waxing and waning.
From crisis to glowing.
From good to not.

It's hard for a heart to keep up.
It's hard not to waste, waiting for their next crash,
hard to laugh without care.

To be a mommy and an unofficial EMT
is not a path I chose.
But somehow, for some Why I do not know
God chose me.

Which means
there is a way to laugh without care
and to love without reserve,
and dance down that path.

I choose to believe,
even though I cannot see the How.
Because Chronically ill can mean sometimes not,
and God chose me.

Of Bloated Blogs and Beans

October 19, 2009 by Rieshy

I took a large box of my Heirloom Scarlet Runner beans to the park yesterday to shell while the older kids did P.E. and the younger kids played.  When you first shell these beans they are bright pink and purple.  Easter egg pink and purple.

Unfortunately by the time I got home to take a picture they had already started to dry.  When completely dry they are still pretty, but turn a very respectable and normal bean color of burgundy and black.

It made me think of how tempting it can be to wax poetic in my blog about all sorts of rather ordinary events, like pink beans, in order to come across as deeper, or more joyful, or more spiritual than I really am.  It's also tempting to me merely because I'm a word lover and descriptive phrases are fun to write.

Opening the pods to reveal gleaming pink and purple peas- perfect chance to rave about joy and beauty being present in any mundane task.  Actually, I was surprised and pleased and enjoyed showing them to my friends, several of whom took baggies home to plant in their gardens next Spring.  End of story, nothing terribly deep.  Except...

It reminded me of a challenge that I read about to not allow computer time and blogging to suck all creativity and mommy time away.  I've been thinking about that for a couple of days.

I'm obsessive compulsive enough that I can easily get carried away and spend my time quite poorly- leaving responsibilities by the wayside.  My 15 yo and I were talking about this and laughed together at the image we created of a mom sitting at the computer while children beg for attention only to hear, "Shut up and go watch a movie, I'm busy with my parenting blog."

As an exercise I thought I'd attempt to write and post, spending just 30 minutes.  A Lean Post, Non Bloated Post- as it were.  Currently there is a wiggly toddle in my lap eating a banana. I think I ought to get credit for posting in 15 minutes- the stickiness factor being quite an obstacle to good typing.

This is part of the 30 min. Moms Challenge.

Old Papers- The End

September 5, 2009 by Rieshy

It's been encouraging to get to read through these "Old Papers" of my mom's, 20+ years after she wrote them, and 16+ years after her early death.  Below is the conclusion of the talk she gave on Suffering and Joy to a group of women at a retreat in 1986- I've been posting them serially under "Old Papers".   I hope someone else finds these words encouraging as well.

So What Are You Going To Do About The Joy?

First of all get it.  We talked about the first step--that of putting on Christ.  Then what?

Look for it everywhere and in everything.

Two weeks ago in "Snoopy" Lucy was counseling Charlie Brown in her out-patient clinic.  She was holding Charlie Brown's cloud, turning it around and around.  She said, "Yes, every cloud has a silver lining."  She turned it around again and said, "But you, Charlie Brown, have a defective cloud."  Not so.  You just have to look for joy a little harder.

Oh, it is easy to have joy when things are going good.  The kids are well, yours and your husband's jobs are going good.  Joy abounds then.

That about when it isn't?  Then where do you find joy?

That is when one may want to have a treasure hunt.  Hunt until you find something in the situation that gives joy.

You may have to go to far limits to find joy.

Joseph found treasure in his situation.  He was hated, mistreated and sold into slavery by his brothers.  Then the good in Potiphar's house was followed by being cast into prison.  Finally he became a person of extreme power when he was made ruler of Egypt.  But he says in Genesis 50:20 to his brothers, "You meant it for evil against me; but God meant it for good to bring it about that many people should be kept alive as they are today."  All his family enjoyed his treasure.

My mother was very ill for two weeks before she died in 1988.  My four sisters, my brother and I were all there in Texas together without our spouses.  That was a first for us.  We had always had husbands, kids, or someone else around.  We fellow-shipped, cried and prayed together.  It was a real bonding time that we will always remember with joy.  Particularly for me.  I am the youngest of the family and have always lived in the Northeast seeing them only once a year at most.  So my mom's death became a precious memory along with the sad.

I didn't have to hunt too long for the treasure Wednesday morning.  I was making coffee in the kitchen while Jim and a guest were showering and shaving.  The water started dripping down on the kitchen cabinet from the upstairs guest bath room.  Made a mess but now the Seminary will have to replace the telephone booth style 1930 shower stall with something a lot better.

I hate to exercise... I fell down 4 stairs and it hurt.  Still hurts, but I can't exercise or vacuum.  Some Treasure.

I would still rather have my son alive at 20 in his sophomore year at college.  I would rather be paying college tuition.  But it would be dishonest of me to say that Jim and I don't enjoy the freedom of having finished that.  One treasure for us is the freedom earlier than we had expected.

Does this sound crude to you?  Far fetched?  Straining to find something good in bad?  Why not.  We got the bad without any wish or desire of our own.  We should find joy anywhere we can.

One of my sister' eldest daughters was killed in a car wreck when she was 30. My niece and her mom had had many bad times.  At one time when my niece was 25, my sister had had to say, "You can't live in our house any more because you are a disruptive influence on your younger sisters."  God was good and healed the relationship between my sister and my niece.  God pulled her back to a faithful relationship with Him also.

But after her death, my sister confided in me that she felt guilty in the joy of not being afraid of the phone ringing with bad news in the middle of the night.

Her joy had guilt.  She was afraid of her treasure.

Peter denied our Christ three times and turned that horrible experience into a powerful treasure by following Christ's command to, "feed my sheep".

And of course, the ultimate example of treasure found comes from Christ's suffering.  there we have our greatest joy because we are freed from the final death and suffering.  Hebrews 12:2  "Looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfection of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God."

Are you asking, "Do I have to go through what Peter, Paul, Joseph, and even you and Mary & Andre went through to get Joy?

Thankfully, we can say No!  but use the trials--- the sufferings you have everyday to get the joy from living.

What treasure comes from your sick kids?  You get to hold them more...

Your washer and dryer broke?  You may find out that things can be worn twice before having to be washed... so in the end you learn another way to save on utilities.

Your husband's job is to be terminated?  You may get the chance to move from NJ to your dream state.  You may find out that money doesn't make happiness and Joy???

Your family does not understand your love for Christ?  Your faithful witness may draw them to God.  I have learned to know some of your sufferings while being here and I have no pat answers for you, for where you with God's help is going to find your joy.  But you can.

God has given us that much used passage in Romans 8:28 "God works for good with those who love him."  That is a cause for joy.  since we love Him, everything that comes our way will have a treasure for us.

Go treasure hunting everyday!

Old Papers- Part 5

August 19, 2009 by Rieshy

This section of my Mom's old talks is pretty short.  She mentions the death of my brother Nathan.  He was the youngest of the 4 of us.  A veritable golden-boy.  Platinum hair, blue eyes, smart as a whip, athletic, annoying but already charismatic.  My mom walked to meet Nathan after school each day in order to walk him home.  One afternoon he ran across the street to greet her instead of waiting for her and was hit by a car and killed instantly.  He was 7 years old.

I never got the opportunity to talk to my mom about Nathan's death from a mother's perspective because Mom died while my oldest child was still a baby.  Finding these papers has been interesting, to say the least.  This section particularly makes me fully feel the lost opportunity to ask her questions-  the notes are the briefest and the hardest to read.  I am sure she said quite a bit more at the retreat where she gave these talks.

I believe the last line is a quote from C.S. Lewis.  The photo shows Nathan when he was barely out of toddler-hood.  He was a cutie with those saddle shoes.

Why Joy?

That is like asking why did someone invent coffee ice cream.

God promises lots of things and one of the re-occurring promises is that of joy.

He wants us, His women, to be happy.  To be secure in the fact that He rules the World.  He Has Last Say.  The ultimate promise is in Luke 10:20... "rejoice that your names are written in Heaven."

God wants us to take all those problems we have talked about last night, all those times of suffering and give them to him so we can find the joy.  Look thru and see.

Joy like my husband and I received after the death of Nathan.  We were overwhelmed of course.  By the agony of his absence.  By the absence forever from our lives- but God was there with us just like He promised.  Psalms 30:11 became real to us.  A precious reminder that He fill the void.

Psalms 30:11 "Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; thou hast loosed my sackcloth and girded me with gladness, that my soul may praise thee and not be silent.  O Lord my God, I will give thanks to thee for ever."

I remember being in our living room the night Nathan was killed... I had to say, "Thank you Lord, because you have already given joy instead- peace that turned into joy."  I hadn't thought to blame God.  He was there with me and gave me acceptance of the situation.

I was surprised by joy because it came so quietly and quickly.

Old Papers- Part 4

August 7, 2009 by Rieshy

It's a bit daunting to post this Old Papers post.  It's is on the topic of Joy.  It's daunting because if you lived in my house this week I don't think joy would be the first word you'd use to describe my current attitude.  I'm pretty darn sure my children would think up other words like; cranky or perhaps nagging, or perhaps,  "We love her, but let's pool all our money together and send her to visit one of her sisters for a few days (weeks)."

I've temporarily lost my focus and my joy.  I think they fell out of my pockets while I was errand-running one day and I've just now noticed they are missing.  It's a problem that more coffee just won't solve.  At the risk of my hypocrisy meter hitting the red zone here's a talk my mother gave to Princeton  seminary wives about 20 years ago on joy as part of her series on suffering:

What is Joy?
God given joy is not the momentary happiness that we receive from possessions, beauty, position in life, career or even our children.

I know that I get happiness from a new car, a new piece of furniture... even a new pair of shoes.  But these things go by... the shoes wear out or go out of style quickly.

Happiness comes from:
a clean house... it gets dirty.
a new car... gets old, needs repairs.
new clothes... get dirty and wear out.
my children... they grow up and can sometimes disappoint me
my health... I can become ill.

Joy is not happiness or contentment.  God doesn't promise me happiness or contentment.  But He does promise me joy.
Romans 5:11 "Not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received our reconciliation."

Romans 12:12 "Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayers."

Romans 14:17 "For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit."

2 Corinthians 6:10 "...as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing ; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything."

Galations 5:22 "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness"

Philippians 4:4 "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice."

1 Thessalonians 5:16 "Rejoice always."

1 Peter 1:8 "...believe in Him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy."

I John 1:4 "And we are writing this that our joy may be complete."

Therefore, we recognize we must get our joy from a more permanent source.  That makes it necessary to re-define joy.  Real joy can only come from Jesus.  That demands that we know this Jesus before anything can be based on Him.  He only can give us lasting joy.

Thus I must:
1. Acknowledge Jesus as God's Son.
2. Acknowledge that he died and was raised.
3. Put this Jesus on as MY Savior.
4. Be ready for the relationship to begin.

I have joy in doing His will and using my abilities that He has given me.  I know we all have read and studied the parable of the talents.  But look again at them briefly.

Matthew 25:14  A man prepares to go on a journey and brings his three servants in and gives them their talents... 5 to one, 2 to one, and 1 to the last.  When he returns and calls for an accounting for the talents, the servant with 5 original talents has earned  5 more, the servant with 2 original talents has earned 2 more.  The servant with 1 talent hadn't used his 1 talent thus had even that one talent taken away.

What I want us to really see is that the servant with 5 and the servant with 2 were both told the exact same thing by the returning master.  "Well done, enter into JOY of your master."  Joy for a job well done!  So this permanent last, fulfilling joy comes when I am in a right relationship with God and when I am using My abilities in the manner acceptable to Him.

Old Papers- Part 2

July 10, 2009 by Rieshy

Sam's crankiness, Jack's poolside throwing up all make sense now.  Someone invited the flu to our house without my permission.  Probably the same someone who always spills ice on the floor in front of the fridge.  The upside is I am showing videos in the middle of the day with absolutely no guilt, which means I have time to sit at my computer unmolested.  I thought I'd transcribe another section of my Mom's old talks about suffering.

Remember that I am transcribing lecture notes as they were written, and Mom probably expounded on certain areas.  Some of this section seems a bit abrupt when typed but try to imagine a sweet voice and an incongruously loud laugh.

Why is Suffering In The World?

Years ago when we lived in Boston, my friend, Peggy Holley won a radio contest in  my name with the following ditty:

God made a beautiful beginning,

But Man spoiled his chances by sinning.

We hope that this story will end in God's Glory,

but at the present, the other side is winning.

We live in a world where there is sin. When we put on our Lord as our savior, we don't get plucked up and moved to a perfect place.  He leaves us here to contend.

We are told that Satan is a fallen angel.

2 Peter 2:4  "For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them in to hell..."

Jude 6 "And the angels that did not keep their own position but left their proper dwelling have been kept by him in eternal chains in the nether gloom until the judgement of the great day"

We know that Satan has powers.  He tempted Jesus when Jesus was lead into the wilderness. He had to have had the power to fulfill these temptations.

Jesus himself, called him the Prince of this world.

1) John 12:31...now shall the ruler of this world be cast out.

2) John 14:30....for the ruler of this world is coming.  He has no power over me.

3) John 16:11...because the ruler of this world is judged.

We are told in 1 Peter 5:8 that he walks around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour.

So with suffering we have 2 choices.

#1 God is the author of suffering and He puts it in the world to hurt, to refine us, to test us.  That God has absolute control and plans suffering as a tool....

#2 Satan has power too and he tries us with his powers.  That it is Satan who wants us to suffer.  That it is Satan who wants us to sin and suffer.

The only perfect place where there was no sin, sorrow, or suffering was the Garden of Eden.  When man and woman made the choice to disobey God and eat the wrong food, they made the choice for all of us to have to live in the World.

God did not want to be worshiped by robots... He wants us to worship Him freely.  He has a perfect will and a permissive will.  He allowed the death of our child but he did not design it.  He could have prevented it... but my son had the choice of running across the street or waiting for me as he should.  Once the choice was made, we have to live with the circumstances that come from that choice.

When we were told that, "God must surely love you because of the suffering you are going thru."  I was less than Christian in my attitude.

Of course, they got their idea from Hebrews 12:6 "For the Lord disciplines him whom He loves."

Discipline and Love may go together but the God of discipline and love does not cause suffering just so one can grow from it.

It comes down to would you rather believe that God made suffering and plans it for us or that we live in a world that is not longer perfect and Satan has powers too.

Old Papers

July 5, 2009 by Rieshy

My mother, Genie, died in 1993 of Primary Pulmonary Hypertension. She was only 53. I think they have since changed the name of her illness, though they still don't know much about it, nor do they have a cure. Curiously, they can now slow it's progress with Viagra. A fact that would have made Mother laugh and given Dad ammunition for much teasing.

A couple of years ago my Dad gave me a box of some of Mom's papers that I stuck away without sorting. When I finally looked through them I found a series of short talks she gave sometime in the late 1980's at a retreat to a group of young wives from Princeton Theological Seminary.

The opening section was entitled "What is Suffering". I found it very characteristic of my mother that though she mentioned my brother's death she didn't share a lot of details about the rest of that awful year.  That same year:
  • my parents also lost two close family friends to unexpected deaths.
  • My father lost his job and we moved from Maryland to Canada, and then from Canada to New Jersey.
  • My mother's father died.
  •  For a while in Canada the doctors thought that I had Leukemia.
  • My sisters were teenagers.
Those are just the things I know about. All in the same year.

I thought I'd post the talks one or two at a time as I go through them.

What is Suffering?

You have suffered today. In some way.

Some of you cleaned the house, left meals prepared, did the laundry for the children and your husband so that you could be away tonight and tomorrow...without TOO much guilt.

You have gone thru this day so quickly that right now you have an Excedrin headache #99.

Or:
Your kids have been sick since the 1st of October and you are so tired of runny noses that you could scream.

Or:
You just found out that your husband's job is to be terminated.

Or:
The washer and dryer both stopped working. Both at the same time.

Or:
Your family doesn't understand your desire to be a Christian and belittle you.

Some of you are thinking, "None of these are suffering. Some are minor discomforts... Let me tell you about REAL suffering".

I know that a divorce, death of a mate, parent or a child is real suffering. But the other can be too.

My husband and I have had the experience of the death of a child.  We had three daughters when our son, Nathan was born in 1970. He was named Nathaniel because it means Gift of God and we felt that he was indeed a gift.

When he was in first grade he had to cross a very busy four lane street to get to school. He was not allowed to cross alone...we walked him across going to school and met him when it was time to come home. One day he saw me and ran to meet me...He was hit by a car and killed instantly.

Most often, tho, we only go thru a death like that once. Or a divorce once. Death of parents once...

We learn to deal with this and we hope never to use that ability again for ourselves in our whole lives.

The little discomforts and illness come all the time and we need to know how to give them over to God so that we can know how to give the big ones.

My definition of suffering is anything unpleasant, hard to deal with, anything that causes pain or grief.
