Caginess Is Genetic

May 1, 2010 by Rieshy
I grew up in a family that had a sit down dinner at 5:00 p.m. every night.  Dinner was always accompanied by salad, unsweetened iced tea, and always followed by dessert.   Dessert, that capstone of the food pyramid.

I learned over the years that my mom was a tricky, cagey mom.  She would often serve the dessert to everyone and then pull out a last prized, piece of hidden chocolate cake for herself.

I also discovered as an older teen that my mom kept chocolate stashed for medicinal purposes.

Perhaps medicinal pieces of Toblerone is what kept her from killing me during my teens.

My 15 yo received a gift of some chocolate yesterday, which she poured into bowl and put into the main pantry to share with the family.

Imagine my laughter when I was trying to clean out cupboards last night and found this tea cup filled with my daughter's chocolate behind the Argo.

Unbeknownst to the rest of us she had craftily hidden a small private stash.

For the record, I didn't eat any.  After all, my stash is stored elsewhere.

We have a hidey hole for special treats. Of course ours is to keep dh from knowing about the existence of sweets in the house. You have a very generous (reasonable) daughter.

My stash ----shhhh---is in the china teacups in the butler's pantry...safe forever!

Seeing your picture of cornstarch reminds me that I am half way through my last container. My husband is the one with a stash. He is a sweet addict and has stuff all over the place.

Hilarious! I'm a stasher, too, though I don't recall anyone in my family ever doing so. Of course, now I'm raising some "stashers." It's always nice to have SOME chocolate hidden somewhere.

Brilliant! Did you leave her stash there? I definitely would have eaten at least five pieces and left a thank you note.

ha, sounds like my daughter! Just found out today, that she stashed a chocolate cupcake inside the oatmeal canister, thinking now one uses it much...we had a box of hostess cupcakes and she figured they would all be gone in one day...so, she goes to get it and finds a note of thanks inside and the cupcake gone! Turns out it was dh who did that, his sense of humor!

Once when my children were little I hid something way in the back of the fridge. I didn't realize that from 3 feet tall they could see from underneath to the back of the fridge. So much for stretching out the sweets.

This is great! :)

I have a feeling that all you fellow stashers also probably steal pieces of Halloween candy while your children sleep. Not that I do anything so despicable...

Oh, man. Busted.

In our family, we all have our stashes. They are not even hidden. We all have our personal boxes, where we keep the stuff we want to make sure does not disappear.

There is a lot of sharing going on, but we do not share everything (and even what we share, is not always equal...)

And then there is the "communal stash" that is there for special treats and class trips.

I don't want my kids to eat lots of junk, but it is a "must have" on class trips and such...
